Who We Are

FRN

In August of 2014, the WVU Food Recovery Network became an official student organization at WVU, created by two students who had an interest in fighting food waste and hunger in Morgantown.

Since then, we have recovered nearly 5,800 meals from dining halls and cafes at WVU, Morgantown businesses, and Round Right Farm. The FRN mobilizes students to reduce food waste by transporting leftover food items to charities in the Morgantown area. FRN partners include The Rosenbaum House, Catholic Charities, The Bartlett House, The Rack at WVU, The Ronald McDonald House, and Scott's Run Settlement House.

Our organization is also committed to educating students and citizens on issues related to food security and homelessness. In November 2015, we held a week of events for National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week. We hosted a discussion panel featuring experts in the areas of homelessness and hunger relief, a food waste documentary "Just Eat It!", and students from Suncrest Middle School to present their food waste reduction plans for their own school.

The organization recently partnered with the Sierra Student Coalition to build a compost bin on a local co-op farm, Conscious Harvest. We have established partnerships with The Grind, a local coffee shop, and Juice Bar in the Evansdale Crossing to regularly recover compostable materials. Some of our other activities include cooking dinners at our partner agencies and participating in on-campus student org events.

Through our efforts, we hope to instill sustainable, long term change at the university by making others aware of just how much food we waste as a society and in what ways we can operate more efficiently to reduce harm to the environment.

Please join us for one of our bimonthly meetings in the Blackwater Room of the Mountainlair!
